IVIG (Immunoglobulin) is used to treat various autoimmune, infectious, and idiopathic diseases. We can provide and administer your IVIG infusions in the comfort of your home or workplace. What conditions does IVIG treat?

  • Immune deficiencies like immune thrombocytopenia (ITP)

  • Kawasaki Disease (KD)

  • Guillain-Barre syndrome

  • Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIPD)

  • Lupus

  • Myositis, Polymyositis, Dermatomyositis

  • Neurological diseases like Myasthenia Gravis or Multiple Sclerosis

  • People who receive bone marrow transplants may also use IVIg to prevent infections

  • Solid Organ Transplant Rejection

How does IVIG Work?

Your body’s immune system normally makes enough antibodies to fight germs that cause infections. But if you have an immune deficiency, your body can’t make enough of them. This puts you at greater risk for infections that could make you very sick. IVIG gives you antibodies that your body is not making on its own so you can fight infections.

In autoimmune diseases like lupus, the treatment may help your body raise low red-blood-cell counts. Not enough of these and you can become anemic and feel very tired. IVIG helps stop the white blood cells of people with lupus from destroying their red blood cells. In people with myositis, the treatment may block your immune system’s destruction of muscle cells. Both children and adults can be treated with IVIG.

Immunoglobulin is part of your blood’s plasma. It has antibodies in it to fight germs or disease. When people donate blood, this part can be separated out. Liquid immunoglobulin is taken from the blood plasma of donors who are screened to make sure they are healthy. The plasma is tested for serious infections like hepatitis and AIDS. The plasma is purified before it's used for IVIG therapy.

If you get IVIG, it can help strengthen your immune system so you can fight infections and stay healthy.

What should you expect at your IVIG Infusion visit?

Your IVIG medication is mixed in a bag of Normal Saline and administered to you through an infusion pump. Your infusion can take between 2 to 4 hours, depending on the dosage. Your IVIG dosage depends on how much you weigh. The standard starting dosage is 400 to 600 mg/kg of your body weight per month.

Typically, IVIG Infusions are administered every 3, 4 or 6 weeks to keep your immune system strong. Your blood may break down about half of the immunoglobulin over that period, so you'll need another dose to keep fighting infections.

Our process

Home Infusion Options will complete an intake form with you that includes your home address, preferred address for your infusion (if different from your home), date of birth, insurance information and your prescribing doctor. Once we receive this information, we verify that your insurance benefits include home infusion therapy or home health care services under your insurance plan. Most insurance plans have one or the other, if not both.

If you don't have a prescription or clinical documentation to send us, we will reach out to your prescribing doctor to obtain the prescription and clinical documentation that supports your diagnosis and treatment.

After receiving the prescription and clinical documentation, we then forward those to your insurance company to request an authorization for your home infusion therapy services. The authorization includes the medication, supplies and nursing services.

We provide consistent communication of the authorization process. Once the authorization is completed, we discuss the outcome and next steps for your

IVIG Infusion.

You will receive a Welcome Email with your assigned team contacts. Your team will consist of a Pharmacy Technician, Your Infusion Nurse and a Billing Specialist. Your infusion nurse will reach out to you and schedule your infusion, based on your preferred availability and location.

Our nurses are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year - daytime hours, evenings, weekends and holidays.

Once you schedule your infusion with your nurse, you and your assigned pharmacy technician will schedule the delivery of your medication and supplies, which will be delivered to you 2-3 days before your infusion.

What should you expect from your Home Infusion Options Nurse?

Once we assign you one of our amazing infusion nurses, you will always have the same nurse. Your nurse will reach out to you and schedule your infusion, based on your preferred availability and location. Your nurse can meet you at work or come to your home, whether it be during the day, the evening or weekends. They will accommodate your schedule.

Your nurse will also answer any questions you have regarding IVIG or the Home Infusion process during the initial scheduling call.

Your nurse will get to know you and your body, they will understand your veins and the best way to access them.

Having the same nurse for every infusion makes getting your infusion a flawless experience. You and your nurse will build a strong relationship and you will always be able to consider them as a cherished advocate for your health.
