WHAT IS ONCOLOGY?

Oncology is an umbrella term used to describe all branches of medicine that deal with the diagnosis, treatment, and overall care of cancer patients, as well as research into how cancer develops and what we can do to help prevent, treat, and cure it. A medical oncologist treats cancer using chemotherapy or other medications, such as targeted therapy or immunotherapy. A surgical oncologist removes the tumor and nearby tissue during surgery. He or she also performs certain types of biopsies to help diagnose cancer.

WHAT IS CANCER?

Cancer is characterized by an abnormal growth of cells. Cells in your body follow an orderly pattern of growth, proliferation and apoptosis (cell death). Cancer cells proliferate uncontrollably, crowd your body’s normal cells and start to cause problems in that area of the body. These cancer cells can migrate to other parts of your body and affect other organs. The migration of cancer cells is called metastasis. Some factors that can contribute to cancer are;

  • Environmental exposure to chemicals and radiation such as asbestos, aspartame, formaldehyde, radon, and UV radiation (sun) to name a few.

  • Genetic factors and family history such as BRCA1 and BRCA2 in breast cancer patients.

  • Smoking and tobacco, Diet and viruses and other infections.

HOW IS CANCER TREATED?

The most common modes of treatment are surgery, chemotherapy or radiation therapy. Chemotherapy’s goal is to kill or slow the growth of cancer cells. Some chemotherapy agents can be given with an IV or pill.
